So, today wasn’t so relaxing a rest day. I dumped so much adrenaline into my body I ache all over. But, DAMN, was it a fun day! I started the day with a yawn inducing 425m zip line that was 120m above the Zambezi River. Quite tame, but one has to start somewhere. Then it was on to what I thought was the main event, the bungee jump off the bridge. Turns out it’s not the most exciting event, but I’ll get to that in a minute. After having two towels wrapped around each leg and then fastened to the end of the bungee line I hopped over to the edge of the platform. I was remarkably calm up to that point.

Then came the countdown, five, four, three, two, one, JUMP! And, jump I did! That’s when my brain woke up and said to me, “what the HELL are you doing?!?!” The next few seconds were brown trouser time, as the ground and river raced up at me at ludicrous speed. Once the bungee started to decelerate me, my brain settled down and started functioning normally again.

Bouncing up and down a few more times upside down was amazing. The horizon, bridge, river and rock face all swirled and flipped around in front of me. Finally things settled down and I hung suspended upside down about 50m above the river. At that point they lower a guy down to you, to flip you right side up and winch you back up to the bridge. What a rush it was! I was vibrating with excitement and adrenaline and I still had one more activity to do, the bridge swing.

As I mentioned earlier, I thought the bungee was the main event, but it turns out that the swing was actually more exciting. You jump from the same place as the bungee, but you’re going feet first, and you get a lot closer to the water before decelerating and swinging down and away from the bridge. It gives your brain even longer to go “oh crap, the ground is going to get me this time”. After I was finished, I was buzzing with so much energy, I felt like sprinting around like an overexcited dog running in circles. By the way, if you look closely, I’m wearing my Charles Darwin shirt…Darwin Award, here I come!
I know this is supposed to be a bicycle tour of Africa, but bungee jumping has long been on my bucket list of things I’ve really wanted to do, and Victoria Falls is one of the best venues in the world to do it. I wasn’t going to pass up this opportunity. And if your not an adrenaline junky, the falls themselves are spectacular. I went to both the Zambia side, and Zimbabwe side and are both well worth the price of admission.
Tomorrow we get back on the bikes and say goodbye to Zambia and cycle into Botswana.
